U2 ― 2012/02/02 23:57
I haven't been a big fan of U2 but I just watched a U2 documentary on Music Air. The program was called “Classic Album” and they featured an album called “Joshua Tree”. I noticed the drummer doing some really interesting beats. That album hit number 1. It was actually their first hit album. They were already doing big venue concerts before they had hits. The time was the 80’s the days of the synth pop electric days. U2 was different of course, away from the that. And so kind of refreshing.
super bowl ― 2012/02/04 00:47
A friday night before super bowl sunday? I don’t really care that much but then it is my home team, the Patriots. Of course I’ll be rooting for them. I may even watch the game on Sunday morning if I can. I remember the Pats lost a super bowl a few years back to the quarterback they’ll be facing on Sunday. They’ll have their chance to get revenge.
blue note tokyo ― 2012/02/04 23:06
Last Sunday I was at the local live house and I picked a Blue Note Tokyo newspaper. Yes it was like a tabloid newspaper. I remember not too long ago Blue Note used to have information on nice glossy paper. It was more sophisticated reflecting the high price you pay when you see the acts. As I looked through the newspaper I noticed there were 3 or 4 Japanese musician/bands on the bill for 3 or 4 days at a time. A few years ago you never saw Japanese musicians playing at Blue Note. So I guess the recession is hitting them hard. They can’t afford to pay band charge, hotel fees and flight fares for foreign musicians any more. So we find domestic musicians and low quality information booklets. Maybe we’ll see the day when there won’t be any more foreign musicians at Blue Note Tokyo. Time will tell.
James Brown ― 2012/02/22 00:55
Today I watched Music Air on cable TV. It was a James Brown concert. I’d say he was about in his early 50’s at the time. He did all his hits like “I Feel Good”, Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag”, and others. The band was so amazingly tight hitting so many stops and starts with James’ cues. There was section where he was dancing like he did in his young days. He did the same steps really well and he also did complete splits. Considering his age at the time it was awesome. We can see that Michael Jackson copied a lot from James Brown, the legend that won’t be forgotten.
Try movies ― 2012/02/23 00:09
Ever use movies to teach any of your lessons? I do. They’re a great way for students to learn natural phrases and improve listening. I’ve used movies like “The Firm”, “Catch Me If You Can” and “Mrs. Doubtfire”. I also made a 16 week course for business people using the movie “Working Girl”. People can get a lot of business vocabulary from that movie. With some movies I have students buy the scripts. They’re in book format called “スクリーンプレー you know Screen Play. These books have the entire scripts of the movie along with translations and meanings of every natural expression. You can buy them used from Amazon and they’re in excellent condition for sometimes less than \1,000. So if you never you ought to give movies a go in your lessons.
