new location ― 2011/03/02 00:21
I got transferred from my place of work to a much closer school. It's only 3 stops away. My previous school was 18 stops
away. What a difference a closer location makes. It's like you're working less time. And I was commented by my daughter
Japanese is getting better. That's a first for sure. gives me motivation for studying to pass the Level 3 Japanese
Proficiency test this year.

Take A Pebble ― 2011/03/03 00:48
I had a request from one of the students in one of my “From Music To English” classes to prepare an Emerson Lake and Palmer song called Take A Pebble. It’s a really nice song. You’ve probably never heard of it or of the band if you’re than 40. Anyways, I had to chop up the song because it’s so long and it has a strange part where Greg Lake plays acoustic guitar. Check it out on You Tube.

Have you heard about Facebook? I received an article today that’s headline read “Facebook will soon share users’ phone numbers and addresses with 3rd parties”
Do you believe it? I went right to my facebook account and erased all my private contact info. I don’t trust FB’s dealings with Goldman Sachs and other government pigs. We don’t know what their up to.

Esperanza Spalding ― 2011/03/07 01:11
I’ve been checking out Esperanza Spalding on You Tube for the past hour. Quite an amazing musician.Excellent acoustic bass player (she plays electric too) and an excellent singer too. She scats in an original style and composes some interesting songs. She is now 25 years old. At 20 she was teaching at Berklee College of Music. She has won all kinds of awards including the Grammy for best new jazz artist. At first I thought she was just a great singer but then I saw her solo on the standard Autumn Leaves and WOW she has great technique and soloed up a storm. An excellent all around musician. All you bass players must check out this young blood. Esperanza Spalding
Krispy Kreme hype over ― 2011/03/10 00:19
The other day I was on my way to Medaimae and I passed by a Krispy Kreme donut shop. I was surprised to see that the shop was practically empty. I laughed to myself thinking about how just maybe a couple of years ago when the first few Krispy Kreme shops opened the lines seemed miles long of people waiting to go in. Not knowing this I went to Shinjuku where one of the first ones opened to check it out. When I saw the line I said “Forget this, I’m not about to wait hours just for a donut and coffee. And now all those shops are virtually empty. Yesterday I went into Mister Donut just downstairs from my workplace and the place was popping with lines of people buying donuts and coffee. So much for Krispy Kreme’s hype
new logo ― 2011/03/11 00:33
So today as I opened up the Daily Yomiuri to page four I saw a picture of the Starbucks mermaid without any mention of Starbucks around it. I read that this was their new logo. I imagine we’ll be seeing the mermaid made into a world famous character. The crazy Starbucks lovers will eat it up and buy them in massive quantities. Howard Shultz will be laughing all the way to the bank.
the earthquake ― 2011/03/12 21:43
Yesterday was an eventful day for all of us living in Japan. I’ll tell you about my day. I had just finished teaching a class in Kawasaki so I boarded the Nanbu line at Kawasaki station. Suddenly I felt the train start to rock and heard a strange low sound. Then it became clear. This was an earthquake. I got out of the train and the platform was kind of rolling or dancing and I almost lost my balance trying to walk. I thought, “Well, is this the big one we’ve all been waiting for?” I was ready to cover my head with my bag to protect it from falling debris from the roof over the platform. But as I thought this it sort of died down. “So this wasn’t the big one,” I thought, (actually it was for other parts of Japan). So everyone was ordered off the platform and back into station because the trains weren’t going to be running for a while. So once I got out on the ground floor I looked for a bus to Mizonokuchi ( which is kind of close to home. I found it and got in line. I waited for over 2 hours and no bus came. Instead of freezing in the line that was about a kilometer long by that time I went back into the station for a while to warm up. Then I went down to check the Mizonokuchi bus but it still wasn’t running so I heard there was another bus going to the station before it. I got in that line and waited for about another 90 minutes in the freezing cold and wind. Finally got on the bus. Because of all the traffic it took another 90 minutes to get to it’s destination. Then I walked 20 minutes to Mizonokuchi station thinking to take a cab. Upon arrival I saw there was so much traffic that it would be faster to walk home. It took another 90 minutes to get to Futako Tamagawa station which is one station from my house. Luckily the trains had just started running so I took the train from there one stop to Yoga station and walked home. I arrived home super tired at 11:30 pm.
aftershocks ― 2011/03/16 22:38
We had a pretty shaky aftershock this morning and one last night too. They weren’t located in Tokyo though. All the supermarket shelves are pretty empty, especially bread. It can’t be found anywhere. I guess delivery is disrupted with some traffic lights still not working and some train lines still out of service. I suspect things will get back to normal in Tokyo by the beginning of next week. Then all we’ll have to think about is the reactor situation. We are hoping for the best and being prepared for the worst.

rock and roll store shelves ― 2011/03/23 00:19

Wow it was quite an event filled day. We must have about 5 pretty strong aftershocks today. It was literally “rock and roll”. Especially when your on the 8th floor of an old building like I was. For those of you not in Japan: You should have been here.
and the stores are pretty much back to normal from what they were last week went there was nothing at all on the shelves of convenience stores.
