Japanese Proficiency Test2010/11/16 00:22

Well I'm finally breaking down and am gonna try the Japanese Proficiency Test for the first time in my 31 years of life in Japan. I can't believe it myself. I've received my test voucher and will do the practice test on 11/21 and the real test on 12/5. Wow, I'm psyched and a little nervous.

Vaccination Scares2010/11/17 23:55

First of all let me give you the answers to yesterdays idiom quiz:
1 e A
2 c B
3 b D
4 d E
5 a C

Yesterday I found an article on internet news. The headline read:

Vaccines You Need to Update Now
The lifesaving adult vaccinations you're probably missing.

Well as you probably know I’m probably the most skeptical person in Japan. I’m sure there are those who would read this and immediately call their doctor and get those 5 vaccinations ASAP. Now me, when I read it I thought, “Those pharmaceutical companies really like to scare people so they can make more and more money. Just like they did when they teamed up with scientists, WHO and media companies to scare people with the recent “new (swine) flu” which was actually a lot less severe than flu”s of the past. The pharmaceutical companies quickly devised a botchy vaccine and starting raking in the bucks selling all over the world while some people were dying from it’s side affects.

Well, the vaccines are:
Tetanus and diphtheria (Td), plus whooping cough (Tdap)
Measles, mumps, and rubella
Pneumonia, and its complications, such as meningitis
Shingles
Flu

Beaujolais Nouveau2010/11/19 00:06

Today I got my Beaujolais Nouveau wine as I do every year. I haven’t tasted yet but I’m about to open it right now. Just a moment…………It’s open. And now a sip……..Ahhhhhh. Sweet and dry in one taste. Smooth as silk. Fruity and grapey. Sooooooo goooood. I’m in heaven. Goodnight.

the 13th Live Party2010/11/21 23:02

Sipping on Beaujolais Nouveau again. MMmmmm.
Last night was our 13th Kin no Tsubo Live Party. I wasn’t expecting turnout again but I was surprised to have 33 people which fills the club to about 80%. So I’d have to say that it was once again a successful night. A splendid time was had by all. I’ll keep you posted on the next event and hope that you too can join us.

Kamakura2010/11/23 21:58

Today I and another teacher took 4 students to Kamakura for a 4 hour lesson about describing landmarks. We went to 3 spots; The great Buddha, Hase Temple, (which houses the Kannon Statue) and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. We arrived at Kamakura station and then took the Enoden Line 3 stops to Hase station. The Enoden line is a very nostalgic train line over 100 years old with a traditional look. It runs on a single track.
The Great Buddha is made of bronze but it’s actually green today. I supposed if it was polished it would return to it’s original bronze finish. It’s the 2nd biggest Buddha statue in Japan, second to the one in Nara.

Inside Hase temple we saw the Kannon statue characteristic for it’s 11 heads, very impressive and very big. Each head represents a level on the way to enlightenment.

We finished off with visiting Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine. We climbed lot of stairs to get up there. It was pretty crowded with lots of people lining up to say a prayer. There was actually a wedding going at the shrine as well.

I was amazed to see rickshaws being pulled by young men dressed in the original puller’s garb. They were all over the place. A lot of people were enjoying riding in them. I wonder what the cost was.

If you haven’t checked out Kamakura, it’s a worthwhile trip.

Scofield and Lovano on Music Air2010/11/25 01:03

The other day I just happened to turn the TV on to Music Air channel 260 and there was one of my favorite guitarists John Scofield playing with a monster tenor player Joe Lovano. The drummer was the very creative Bill Stewart. I don’t know whothe bass player was but they sounded so so good. Scofield and Lovano sounded so good together.. The songs were also great. I looked for this particular band on You Tube but couldn’t find the equivalent. Anything by Scofield is good though. He is a master.

an umbrella2010/11/26 00:58

It was a pretty uneventful day today. I was un able to make a copy of a VHS video with my 2 video machines but I’ll continue that task on Saturday. As it was raining tonight, I needed an umbrella so I found a nic big one at my place of work so that’s one good thing that happened today.

Thanksgiving2010/11/28 22:02

Last night I had a Thanksgiving party at my house. There were 7 of us in attendance including me and my wife and daughter. We had a turkey ( a small one) salad, sweet potato casserole, saffron rice, homemade cheese cake and home made apple pie. It was a good time with lots of beer and wine.
