recent activity2010/03/01 00:14

Yesterday I went Asakusa to take part in a jam session. It has been good to get back into playing and practicing. I’m happy to say that I’m on my way to getting back some of my technique. I’ll be to the local live house to do some individual practing.
My work with “From Music To English” has taken a step forward as well. I’m earnestly working to bring this new concept of learning to more and more venues and institutions.. Tomorrow I’ll be holding a class in Kawasaki, and on March 13th I’ll be holding my periodic live music event which features some of my students from FMTE. If you’re free why don’t you come.
Date: March 13th
Time: 7:30 - 11:30
Place: Kin no Tsubo
Cost: \3500 (nomi houdai)

chants2010/03/07 02:07

I’ve been teaching a lot of my students with chants based on idioms ( as you can see on my web site song of the month, these are actually chants). Chants seem to be very difficult for the student at first but through time they will be able to produce near native sounds.. I’ve had success with one student in particular who is able to produce native sounds in chants. I now have to figure out how to make her use it in her speaking all the time. If you have any ideas let me know.

Mao2010/03/11 00:33

We have a new cat. Since my daughter moved out and took “Butch” (the cat I wrote about in a previous entry) with her we missed having “Butch” around and so we wanted another cat. Therefore we now have a Bengal cat that we call “Mao”. Mao has been in heat since we got her and so she’s been leaving sprinkles of piss all over the house: on my shirt, on my sheets, in my wife’s bag, and all over the floor. Today she went to the vet to have an operation to sterilize her. Hopefully she won’t be pissing all over the place when she comes back home tomorrow.

live party and web site update2010/03/18 00:57

Sorry I haven’t been writing but I was busy with preparations for last Saturday nite’s live party. By the way it was a big success once again. That was number eleven. I never thought we’d be able to go this far. The next party will be held on the 24th of June so I’m letting you know early.

My web site has finally been updated even though it’s past the month’s midway point. My song of the month is actually chants based on the idiom “pick out” You can practice your liaisons, word reductions, and accents with me by accessing http://www.ne.jp/asahi/eigo-de/karaoke/songs.html
by accessing the same address you can check out some of the idioms and expressions from the movie “Dead Poet’s Society” this is an excellent movie about a boy’s private school and their controversial teacher.

My journal tells you where you can hear live jazz in Tokyo. Major and minor clubs are talked about along with a mini assessment

strange programming hours2010/03/22 01:01

Tonight I was expecting to watch Larry Carlton live on Music Air ( digital TV Station.).I had seen ads on the station saying it was on today at 11:00. so when I turned on the TV at 11 there was no Larry Carlton. I thought this was strange so I checked the TV guide and I saw that it was on at 11:00 AM!!!!!!. I think this is pretty stupid programming. Most people watch TV at night maybe after work right? I think I’ll mail Music Air and ask them why their programming is a bit out of the ordinary.

B Flat2010/03/30 14:35

Last Friday nite I went to B flat in Akasaka to hear the Tokyo Big Band. They were a very tight band with about 40% of the band being foreigners. It’s led by a piano player named Jonathan Katz. I don’t know much about him but I guess he does the arrangements for the band. The songs that I heard, (which is only 4, I got there very late) were a bit over arranged for my taste. Nevertheless, It might be worth your money to go see them.

The venue, B flat, is a nice environment to hear jazz. It has a good sound and is a pretty big size. I’d say it holds about 150 people. It’s also close to the station. Check it out sometime
